The Garden has had a sustained research presence in Madagascar since the 1970s, and established

permanent base in the 1980s. The program grew locally and organically, and there are now more than 150 staff members associated with it, of which almost all are Malagasy. After more than 25 years of concentrated work in Madagascar, the Garden is more committed than ever to its conservation efforts in region. The program's accomplishments in 2013 include:
