Trekking Through the Mountains of Iraqi Kurdistan

As a winter sports enthusiast I often dream of climbing the high peaks of world. It seemed to be

such an attainable reality when I was a child to find myself on the summit of a mountain in the European alps, or skiing through untouched expanses of snow in the Andes. How about trekking in of all places, Northern Iraq? A few years back I was lucky enough to find myself standing 8,000 feet above sea level in Austria, knee deep in snow, cold air biting my exposed nose, and eternally happy. However, I knew this was a just a teaser to what was to come. The first things that come to mind when one thinks of Iraqi Kurdistan aren’t always positive. Iraq, along with many other nations in the middle east, have for the past several decades struggled through numerous violent conflicts and economic downturn. I would not by any means consider myself a thrill seeker. The adventures that I seek aren’t centered around pushing any limits, or living life on the “edge”. I, like many people, simply want to see what I have never seen, and like working hard to get there. This next adventure that I am going to present to you isn’t meant to scare people away because they aren’t thrill seekers or dare devils, but it’s certainly a trip for those who are looking for that indescribable feeling of completion after working hard to achieve a goal.
