The colors of the flag of Malta may trace back to the red and white checkered banner of Count
Roger of Sicily who is believed to have tore down a bi-colored corner of his flag and presented it to Malta in 1091. In 1942, King George VI of the UK awarded the George Cross to the islanders for their exceptional bravery and gallantry in World War II. The George Cross originally appeared on the unofficial flag of Malta placed on a blue canton. When Malta got its independence on 21 September 1964 the blue canton was removed and the George Cross was shown edged in red Mysterious Mayas, volatile volcanoes, classic colonial structures, placid lakes - Guatemala offers you a slice of each. If the mysteries of the Mayas intrigue you, visit the ancient sites that reveal just enough to stoke your interest. Or stroll through the museums and monuments in the cities and be transported back in time.
