Sarushima is the only uninhabited island within the Tokyo Bay abundant in nature and historical
heritage. The whole island is the remnant of a behind-the-scenes fortified zone made during the Meiji era(1868-1913). Surprisingly, there are gun batteries, barracks and traces of arsenals at places remained in a good state of preservation. You could feel how the days were, trekking around this small island less than 2 kilometers in circumference. Old tunnels built of brick along with narrow passages and cuts can be seen here and there, which might entangle trekkers in a labyrinth!
