
Before Ayutthaya, there was Sukhothai. Established in the 13th century, this was the first
capital of Siam. Its name means “Dawn of Happiness,” and it’s said to represent a golden age in Thai civilization.
During the Sukhothai kingdom, the Thai alphabet and Theravada Buddhism were introduced. Art and architecture also flourished, as did trade.
